masonic apron
masonic apron
Name
American Masonic Ark and Dove/Master Apron.
Origin/date
USA. I would date this apron 1800-1820 on account of the use of paint and colors.
Material and dimensions
Hand painted on leather. 41 cm x 38 cm.
Description
Painted on the flap is an all-seeing eye with glory rays. The central motif is the alter with the bible, square and compass. Underneath a checkered pavement. Three steps lead up to the alter. A pair of columns flank the central motif. On top they make an arch with the inspription amitcitia and caementum (friendship and concrete). On each side are more masonic symbols: sun, moon, beehive, dove, ark. The combination of ark, dove and the arch refers to the ark and dove side degree.
Provenance
USA, private dealer.
