Origin/date
UK, late 18th century (gold collar dates 1785/86).
Material and dimensions
Ivory, wood, gold, brass. The schaft is 88 cm long, the handle 4,9 cm, circ 8,7cm.
Description
Straight handle with etched masonic symbols (on one side square and compass on the other side two crossed keys which are the Treasurer’s jewel and a five-pointed star symbolic of the five points of fellowship. A carved all seeing eye is on the cap top. Set in a narrow gold collar with lion passant, crowned leopard head, lower case k (1785/86) and duty mark George III facing left - late Georgian period. Below the collar are 2 gold eylets for wristcord or tassle. Mounted on a pale honey coloured teardrop ridged Malacca cane, middle bark. Ends with a metal tipped brass ferrule which is certainly not a recent replacement.
