scottish rite horn beaker

Name

Scottish Rite Horn Beaker

Origin/date

US, 1812.

(The country of origin is a guess, but a good one. An inscription on the beaker reads 1812. The Supreme Council in its modern form - with the establisment of the 33° degree - originated in the US in 1801 and only reached the continent after 1812)

Material and dimensions

Horn, engraved, 11 cm high.

Description

The iconography on this beaker refers to the 33° degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottisch Rite. On one side the crowned double-eagle; on the one side the number 33, the all seeing eye and the letter G (these two last symbols are not specific for this degree). The inscription reads Deos Meumoue Jus. This should be Deus. In Latin Deos is the accusative plural form of Deus, but I assume the Latin of the maker just wasn’t that good.

Provenance

Belgium, antiques dealer
